The Grizzly G0538 Oscillating Spindle Sander features a 1/3-HP motor that helps produce a clean oscillating motion for a superior finish. The G0538 is a benchtop spindle sander that is small in comparison making it portable and easy to move. Coming in at only 35 pounds, it one of the more compact spindle sanders there are.
With its large table, it can accommodate small and medium sized projects with ease. Larger projects may not be suited which makes this a great sanding tool for beginners and DIY hobbyists. With a large table surface that measures 20 x 14 inches the Grizzly G0538 is an adequate sized tabletop.
The ¼-HP motor sands at a speed of 1725 RPM’s, has a toggle on/off switch with locking tab, oscillates at 72 SPM, and features a 2 ½” dust port for dust collection. Included are six different spindles which provides a variety of sanding diameters.

The portability and size of the Grizzly G0538 is great for those working with a limited amount of space or those looking for a portable spindle sander. Within the base, there is a location where the spindles can be stored, but unfortunately there isn’t a location to store the washers needed to secure the spindles.
Most consumers have raved over the power of this smaller spindle sander. Although it’s only 1/3-HP, it performs more like it’s at least a ½-HP motor. At the current price point it’s a bargain which makes it even more impressive, especially for beginners.

At first sight, it’s hard to not notice the plastic construction which raises some serious durability concerns. Although it seems to stand-up to time, the lack of a harder material such as cast iron is something to consider if you are looking for a spindle sander for larger projects. While the device itself is quiet, that all changes as you hear a constant whining with the area moving through the spindle when a shop vac is hooked up.
Although there’s a location to store the spindles within the base, the inability to store the washers and wrenches needed for the spindles doesn’t make any sense. Consumers who purchased the G0538 who were looking for a production type sander were very unimpressed as it’s better suited enthusiasts instead of professionals.
