This is a great mid-range drum sander, but for heavy duty projects it’s not recommended.
Grizzly drum sanders resemble something sort of a little green machine, but when looking at everything these power tools can do their everything but. These sanders stand out from the rest as the green powder coated finish has helped give them one distinct, and amazing look. Once you get beyond the look, they tend to perform unlike many others while bringing out the very best in woodworking while helping to get an amazing end-product every time.
The Grizzly G1066Z 24 Inch Drum Sander is another high-quality product that that proves that durability and performance is possible in one cost effective power tool. Coming in at the middle end of the price range, the Grizzly G1066Z drum sander is priced lower than many others while boasting great power and high-quality features.

Product Description
The Grizzly G1066Z 24 Inch Drum Sander brings back that same great powder coated green finish that we’ve come to expect, and on the inside, there are many similarities with other Grizzly drum sanders. For starters, the G1066Z features a strong 5-HP motor along with a 1/3 HP conveyor motor. The dual aluminum sanding drums can handle material up to 23 ½” wide and a thickness of up to 4 ¼”.
It features a hook and look system which is great for securing the sandpaper and cutting down on vibration which typically causes waves and other blemishes in the stock. Great durability on the inside with an all-steel and ball bearing construction. The control panel sports an amp control meter which makes it easier to monitor and make on-the-fly adjustments.
The Grizzly 24” drum sander a dust collection system with two 4” ports. Easily hook up a ShopVac vacuum system which will minimize any sanding dust and is very easy to change or remove. Coming in at under 500 pounds, it’ll require some help to move, but is much lighter than many other industrial drum sanders.

Pros
The specs of the G1066Z are great starting with the 5 HP motor and 1/3 HP conveyor motor. This is significantly more horsepower than most other drum sanders in its price range, but HP isn’t everything. The dust collection system is said to pick up about 95% of all dust while using an attached vacuum system.
Unpacking the G1066Z is quite easy and takes as little as 30 minutes to be fully set-up. Most consumers have stated that minimal, if any adjustments will have to be made, and if you do, there quite easy. The dual drums work great and we highly recommend using 100 grit sandpaper on the front and 150 on the rear.

Cons
On paper, the Grizzly G1066Z 24” drum sander looks great, but after considering what really makes it tick we have our reserve. The 5-HP motor is more when comparing it with other near $2,000 drum sanders, but underperforms at the same time.
Many consumers have reported problems with the motor after only 6 months, and Grizzly’s technical support is less than willing to get you up and running, quickly. Over the phone instructions left many consumers very frustrated, and a replacement is out of the question.

The issues with the motor would deter us as there are a fair mix of consumers who reported issues, and many who didn’t. This in-itself would make us nervous to recommend it as it poses uncertainty and risk that I wouldn’t want to take.
