Drum sanders were meant to be big, at least that’s what you thought. Portability and the most powerful type of sander on the market is difficult to imagine as something that’s meant to be portable, but the idea itself is quite enticing. Power tools come in all different shapes and sizes, and the more we see them the more we understand that everything imaginable is seen with modern power tools.
The JET 628900 Mini 10 Inch 1-HP Drum Sander is just that, it’s a miniature version of what we all envision a drum sander to be. Offering many of the same great features as it’s full-sized family, but giving users a portable version is what this power tool is all about. JET has become known for innovative sanders, and this Mini is yet another reason why.

The JET Mini drum sander sports a miniature frame, but doesn’t lack in the feature department. JET has become a household name for both DIY enthusiasts and woodworking professionals alike making them a staple manufacturer for top of the line products. The JET Mini lives up to their reputation while offering amazing features, in a portable, or Mini model.
The JET Mini sports a 1HP motor and is outfitted with a 4 port dust collection port. The motor also sports a quick continuous duty feature which allows it to handle heavier use, and for much longer periods of time. The dust collection system minimizes the amount of airborne dust which is typically seen with drum sanders, but won’t eliminate dust completely.
Adjustments are done with the hand wheel which is on top of the sander, and is very easy to use on the fly. The size stands-out as one of the best aspects, and despite the size difference you really don’t look much in performance. The 1HP motor seems to be more when using it, and the ability to make precise adjustments at 1/16 of an inch means true precision.
The precision on the drum sander is what most consumers have said makes it really stand out. The tracking system and belt tension is spot-on when sanding smaller items, and changing out the sanding belt and adjusting are extremely easy. Set-up was easy, and the dust collection system outfitted with a large shop vac minimizes, if not eliminates virtually all sanding dust.

If you’re looking for a sander that will be able to tackle all sizes of wood, well, this isn’t it. It’s reported it can handle up to 20” wide pieces with ease, but some consumers have reported anything wider than 20” will become problematic. It’s the perfect drum sander for smaller jobs such as toys and small boxes, but not recommended for anything large.
